CVRD Open House at the Saltair Water Treatment Facility – 13 May 2017

The CVRD Water Dept staff hosted a very informative Open House at the Saltair Water Treatment Facility on the 13 May 2017 from 10-1 pm.  While I was at the Open House, the staff indicated that the Open House was well attended. There was coffee, tea, and those amazing muffins & scones from the Ladysmith Old Town Bakery.  There were tours of the facility with lots of great photos of the work that has been done on the Saltair Water Distribution System over the past years and the upgrades of the New Reservoir that was built in 2014.

 

Brian Dennison, the CVRD Water Dept Mgr., posed for a picture in front of the reservoir to indicate how large it is. The amazing part is that as large as the reservoir is it only stores enough water to supply Saltair users for one day.

Inside the plant there was a chance for people to see the UV device that is used and how the chlorine is added to our water.  One is amazed at all the pipes and other equipment to monitor the treatment systems on site.

It was a great day to find out more about the Saltair Water System Treatment Plant.  The Saltair Water Advisory Committee thanks to the CVRD staff for taking the time to come and host a great Open House here in Saltair.

Saltair Celebration of Volunteers and Canada 150

The SDRA is inviting volunteers (i.e., Parks Commission, Trans Canada Trail data collectors, and SWAC, APC and Society members) to a Saltair Celebration of Volunteers and Canada 150 that will take place from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Saltair Community Centre.  The SDRA is sponsoring this event using Area G Grant in Aid funds are from Area G taxpayers funding.  Here is a quote from the May 24, 2017 CVRD Board meeting.  “3. That a Grant-in-Aid, Electoral Area G – Saltair/Gulf Islands, in the amount of $250 be provided to Saltair Ratepayers Association to support an appreciation event for the Saltair Cycling Group and 150 Quilters and Take 5 advertising.” 

CVRD Bounces Castle

After residents discovered neither the CVRD nor the SCS would pay for a bouncy castle at this year’s Saltair Easter Event, they raised $400 to pay for a bouncy castle.  Despite this, there was no bouncy castle at the event.  Director Dorey explained, “The application to the CVRD to allow the Easter Event to happen on their lands should be 4 to 6 weeks in advance of the event. The CVRD receives 30 to 40 of these events on their property per year and these groups have their applications in on time. Not so with the Saltair event.  That didn’t leave enough time to make adjustments in changing conditions with the bouncy castle third party insurance to cover the bouncy castle.”

It sounds like someone dropped the ball more than once.  What a shame!

Donors Fund Bouncy Castle

Recently, a three-year-old stopped by the home of a Saltair Easter Event volunteer to donate money. The child donated $40 toward the cost of a bouncy castle for the children in Saltair to enjoy when they attend the Saltair Easter Event celebration.

For almost 40 years, the Easter Event has been a Saltair tradition.  Each year, many hardworking volunteers make it happen. Last year, the Saltair Community Society (“SCS”) provided a bouncy castle for the event.  This year, there was no money for a bouncy castle until private donors got involved. It’s inspiring to see an important part of the Saltair Easter Event rescued by generous, local donors but some residents want to know why our recreation budget, community parks budget or grant money was not used instead.
